Mint Juleps

With all of the rain we have had, lately, the mint has started growing.  That means it is time for some mint juleps.   To make these in the traditional manner, mint leaves and sugar are muddled in the bottom of the glass.  That is topped with ice and bourbon is poured over the ice.  The drink is stirred and served with the ice in the glass.
My sister and I had the opportunity to visit an Antebellum home where mint juleps were served. The drinks were so delicious that I had to run home and try to make some. These are easier to prepare and taste better, in my opinion. You will need to let the syrup chill but it can be made in advance and refrigerated until you are ready to serve the drinks.

1 cup of Water
1 cup of Sugar
1/2 cup of Mint Leaves, loosely packed
Bourbon
Brandy
extra Mint Leaves for garnish

In a saucepan, combine water and sugar.  Bring to a boil.  Remove from heat and add mint leaves.  Let the mint steep in the hot liquid for 3 to 5 minutes.  Strain liquid into a measuring cup and discard used mint.  Refrigerate until chilled or ready to serve.
To make the Juleps, fill a glass 3/4 full with crushed ice.  Add 2 ounces of mint syrup, 2 ounces of bourbon and a splash of brandy.  Garnish with extra mint leaves.  Makes 5 drinks.
